The squeak of sneakers against the wood and popping bounce of the ball became the soundtrack of my transformation. This is the story of my journey from a benchwarmer to a leader who commanded the court for forty minutes straight.
My first spark came during a game against Fremont in my freshman year, where I finally got to play good minutes and helped the team achieve a 71-69 victory. Those early days I spent studying the game on the sidelines prepared me as I watched my teammates battle under the bright gym lights. Basketball slowly became more than a personal achievement, rather a system interlocked with relationships that molded who I am today.
I met teammates in my club team, who I found great similarities with: shared jokes and eating dinners. Our coach always arranged team gatherings and events, which bonded our laughter into unforgettable experiences. Through countless practices and late-night team dinners, we developed an understanding that success wasn’t about individual pride. Instead it was about supporting each other in tough times.
As seasons passed, I found my passion wasn’t rooted in any specific technique, but in helping others improve. As my skills developed, coach gave me an opportunity to mentor young kids at basketball, helping them become better players on and off the court. The most important lesson that was taught was not about skill, but about mindset: instilling unbreakable discipline and hard work.
The transition from a follower to leader was gradual. It was shaped by a coach who believed in me. Each coach brought their unique philosophies about the game, which added layers to my understanding of basketball and leadership. A unique aspect that unified them all together was their mindset, which taught me that being a leader meant listening as much as directing, where the strongest teams and players are birthed through a system of trust, communication, and dedication to the spirit of putting the team before oneself.
